A deductive essay is essentially formed based on the same logical reasoning as a deductive argument. This type of argument is based on the idea that circumstances are given that will lead to a logical conclusion. The premise behind this type of logic is that if a person is given enough information they can solve the problem or come to a logical conclusion. Deductive reasoning is not that unfamiliar, even though a person might not realize it. Deductive reasoning assumes a logical progression along a likely path. Most people do this without even consciously thinking about it. A deductive essay, like deductive reasoning, follows a logical, likely path. Even so, a deductive essay might not have a typical thesis as the “normal” thesis would be the conclusion. Such essays reflect the developed logic of many aspects of life, such as detective work and law. This type of logical progression was made famous in Greek philosophy and is often used in the world of education in order to ensure an understanding of a topic and an understanding of a logical progression of thoughts.

A deductive essay is formed from these main parts. The first is the premise. This is a basic idea from which conclusions will be drawn. It will provide the background against which the rest of the logical progression will be measured. This portion of the essay could include more than one premise depending on the topic that is being addressed. Following the premise is the evidence. This consists of the information that is available. In a deductive essay, this could be an article, a scientific finding or any number of other pieces of information. This evidence will be the link between the premise and the conclusion, which is the final piece of a deductive essay. The conclusion puts together the evidence in the context of the premise. Essentially, the conclusion acts as a proof for the premise. Here is an example: Premise: All squares are rectangles Evidence: The shape is a square Conclusion: The shape is a rectangle Often times it is a good strategy for the writer to work backward from the conclusion. The important thing to remember when drafting a deductive essay is to keep the focus of the premise. This is especially important when there is a lot of evidence in between the premise and the conclusion. Remaining clear in the logical progression of the argument is also an essential in a deductive essay.
